DOHA, Qatar - Former American Vice-President Al Gore has opened a lawsuit against Qatar-owned Al Jazeera America over the sale of Current TV, a network he founded in 2005.
Al Gore founded the channel alongside David Boies the supermarket tycoon Ron Burkle and Joel Hyatt, who was the channel's CEO until its sale to Al Jazeera in 2013.
At the time of the sale, part of the purchase price was placed into a holding account and was agreed by Al Jazeera America to be paid this year, but Al Gore and Joel Haytt have accused the channel of withholding the funds, which amount to USD $65-million.
They have filed a lawsuit in Delaware claiming the terms of the contract have not been honoured by the Middle East-owned network.
"Al Jazeera America wants to give itself a discount on the purchase price that was agreed to nearly two years ago," said Al Gore's lawyer, David Boies.
Al Jazeera bought Current TV in August 2013 from Al Gore and a group of shareholders that included Comcast and DirecTV, however, the lawsuit has only been brought by Al Gore and Hyatt, who allege fraud and breach of contract over the sale.
Current TV was set up as a left-leaning channel to counter conservative-leaning broadcasters such as Fox News, it was bought by Al Jazeera in order for them to retain the off-air staff and re-brand it as Al Jazeera America.
Al Jazeera America and its parent company Al Jazeera have not commented on the lawsuit.
