NEW YORK CITY, New York: At least three and possibly up to 15 birds have died from bird flu at two New York City zoos, according to the organization that runs them.
The Wildlife Conservation Society said three ducks at the Queens Zoo died from the virus. Tests are still being done on three ducks and nine wild birds that died at the Bronx Zoo to see if they had bird flu.
To protect other birds, zoo officials have moved vulnerable species to safer areas.
Late last week, state officials ordered bird markets in New York City to close for a week after finding seven cases of bird flu during inspections in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. Governor Kathy Hochul said there is no immediate danger to public health, but the closures are a precaution.
Bird flu has affected farms across the U.S., killing millions of birds and raising egg prices.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the risk to people is low. There have been 67 confirmed human cases of bird flu in the U.S., but none in New York.
