Jo Adell homered twice in the same inning, Taylor Ward and Mike Trout also hit a pair of homers and the visiting Los Angeles Angels claimed their fourth straight series to open the season with an 11-1 pounding of the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.
Adell went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in an eight-run fifth inning. Ward was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Trout drove in three runs to round out the Angels' six-homer outburst. Adell is the third player in Angels history to hit two home runs in the same inning.
Logan O'Hoppe was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored as the Angels had 14 hits and won for the eighth time in 12 games. Los Angeles starter Jose Soriano (2-1) allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.
While Tampa Bay mustered only six hits, Junior Caminero was 3-for-4 with a run. Zack Littell (0-3) surrendered four homers and seven runs in four-plus innings.
Rockies 7, Brewers 2
Brenton Doyle homered, doubled and tied his career high with five RBIs, Zac Veen doubled for his first career RBI and Colorado beat Milwaukee in Denver.
Doyle homered leading off the bottom of the first and finished with three hits for Colorado, which avoided a three-game sweep. Michael Toglia added an RBI double in a five-run eighth inning. Toglia finished with three hits and Scott Alexander (1-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
Jackson Chourio singled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games for the Brewers. Brice Turang went 0-for-5, failing to get a hit for the first time this season. Joel Payamps (0-1) gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Guardians 6, White Sox 1
Steven Kwan went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, Gavin Williams threw five quality innings and Cleveland posted a victory to cap a three-game sweep of visiting Chicago.
Williams (1-0) allowed one run on three hits while Kyle Manzardo connected on a two-run homer. Bryan Rocchio notched a pair of hits and scored a run for Cleveland, which has won four of its past six games.
Jonathan Cannon (0-2) gave up six runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings for the White Sox. Lenyn Sosa tallied a pair of hits for Chicago, which dropped its eighth straight game and became the first team to record 10 losses.
Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3 (10 innings)
Trevor Story's groundout to second in the 10th inning drove in David Hamilton with the winning run as Boston prevailed over visiting Toronto.
George Springer's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th scored Andres Gimenez to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead, but Jarren Duran led off the bottom of the inning with an RBI single that scored Blake Sabol to tie the game at 3.
Story, Duran and Rafael Devers each had two hits for the Red Sox. Tyler Heineman collected three of Toronto's eight hits.
Royals 3, Twins 2
Bobby Witt Jr. drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as Kansas City rallied for a victory over visiting Minnesota.
Witt went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run for Kansas City, which picked up its third win in the four-game series. Daniel Lynch IV (2-0) picked up the victory in relief. Carlos Estevez pitched around a hit batter and a single during a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save.
Ty France homered and Willi Castro and Edouard Julien each doubled for the Twins, who took their fourth loss in five games. Cole Sands (1-1) allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning.
