FORT WORTH, Texas: American Airlines will begin offering free high-speed Wi-Fi to passengers in January 2026, joining a growing list of carriers using in-flight connectivity to win over frequent flyers.
The airline announced this week that the complimentary service will be available to members of its loyalty program in partnership with AT&T. More than 500 regional aircraft will be outfitted for the rollout, and the company estimates that 90% of its fleet will eventually offer in-flight Wi-Fi.
"Customers greatly value staying connected while in the air," said Heather Garboden, American's Chief Customer Officer, in a statement.
American currently charges for in-flight internet access and offers a monthly subscription to loyalty members starting at US$49.95. The new move will align the airline with competitors such as Delta Air Lines, which began offering free Wi-Fi to its frequent-flyer program members in 2022.
United Airlines has also stepped up its connectivity offerings, partnering with Elon Musk's Starlink for onboard internet access last year.
Ahead of the planned rollout, American said it tested the service on select routes and that performance "surpassed expectations."
The airline sees complimentary Wi-Fi as part of a broader strategy to appeal to high-value travelers who are increasingly looking for uninterrupted connectivity during flights.
