The New England Patriots partnered with Boston 25 and nine local animal shelters on Friday to host a dog adoption event at Patriot Place a cause dear to team chairman and CEO Robert Kraft and his wife, Dr. Dana Kraft.

With rookie minicamp kicking off last week, New England fans are eager to see which players picked up by the Patriots have that "dawg" in them.

They weren't the only prospects who reported to Gillette Stadium on Friday, though, with Patriot Place hosting a different kind of draft class looking to catch on in a forever home.

"Patriot Place is hosting the very first Furever Friday pet adoption event with Boston 25 News," said Brian Earley, vice president and general manager at Patriot Place.

"They've been doing a segment on TV news each Friday for the last 13 months and highlighting a particular dog that needs a home, so we partnered with them to do a big event."

The Patriots were proud to be part of this event, as it's near and dear to the hearts of team chairman and CEO Robert Kraft and his wife, Dr. Dana Kraft, who is on the board of directors of the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

The Krafts were sure to stop by the adoption event with their own furry friend Heisman.

"Heisman came into our lives as a birthday present four years ago, and it sensitized me to how important pets are, but especially dogs," Robert Kraft said.

"This guy is part of our family, and I'm really proud of Patriot Place for holding an event like this. People can do so much good in the community by adopting these dogs. It's a win-win just like the Patriots hopefully do this year."

The 12-hour event was a hit, with nine local animal shelters and rescues joining forces for the mission.

"The shelters are really busting out with the number of dogs that they have," Earley said.

"The COVID-19 pandemic led to a lot of dogs being adopted by folks or purchased by people, but then they got to a point where they outgrew their apartment or home. So there are a lot of dogs that need adoption, and we're just working with Boston 25 and these shelters to try and support that."

From purebred Siberian Huskies to mutts of all sorts and sizes, the doggy takeover made for a day filled with tail wags, belly rubs, and puppy-dog eyes.

With the Patriots' passion for the cause, the event was first of its kind, but likely not the last.

"We want to continue to do this," Robert Kraft said. "Dogs have already been adopted out of this event, so that makes us feel good."
