Luka Toews sank six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points, leading Boston College to a 72-61 win over visiting FDU on Monday night at Chestnut Hill, Mass.Toews was 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-9 from 3-point range, hitting a clutch triple during a late 9-0 run that helped the Eagles (6-6) break open a two-point game with 5:14 left.After trailing by 14 in the first half, Boston College shot 63% from the floor while hitting eight of 17 field goals from distance in the second half.Four other Eagles scored in double figures: Donald Hand Jr. (13), Caleb Steger (12), Fred Payne (11) and Boden Kapke (10). Aidan Shaw grabbed 11 rebounds.Noah Melson (14 points) and Eric Parnell (11 points) each sank three 3-pointers for FDU (3-9), which was 8-of-14 from distance to start the game but made just two in the second half. Taeshaud Jackson added 10 points.Parnell's corner 3-pointer helped FDU post an opening 5-0 run while holding Boston College without a made field goal for nearly four minutes. Toews knocked down his first of back-to-back threes and a jumper to flip the score at 10-8.After an 11-11 tie, the Knights used the three to build a 14-point lead with 7:11 left before halftime. Five consecutive 3-point makes fueled an 18-4 burst, including two from Johnson to force a Boston College timeout.
Hand made four free throws across a personal 8-0 response. The redshirt junior scored Boston College's last 10 first-half points onward from the 6:50 mark.The Knights led by eight at intermission despite Jackson's jumper marking its lone field goal during that late stretch which included six missed 3-pointers.A back-and-forth segment out of halftime saw Jackson dunk and score FDU's first four points before Parnell added another three, keeping the Knights up by nine three minutes into the half.Payne and Toews sank back-to-back triples during the opening segment as well, but the Eagles made a 7-0 run to return to the lead at 44-43 on Kapke's layup with 13:25 left.From there, neither team led by more than a basket or had a run longer than 3-0 until Toews canned a straight-on three with 6:05 left. The sophomore from Japan was also at the forefront of a 12-3 run to finish, including another three and a free throw.--Field Level Media
